Appbox review: good app hosting, restrictive starter plans

Appbox has an appealing collection of hosted apps. For a media server, NG-3500 plan is the sensible starting point: the cheaper BG-2000 excludes streaming and only has 2 app slots.

About Appbox

Appbox, also known as seedboxco.net, sells general application hosting with torrent clients and media management among its supported software. Its packages are defined partly by app slots, which limit how much software can run at once - a rather unique approach that is also a limitation.

BG-2000 costs €8.74 per month after the introductory discount and includes 2 TB of storage with unmetered traffic and two app slots. NG-3500 costs €13.95 and raises the allowance to ten slots with 3.5 TB.

What Appbox gets right

  • The app store contained about 75 apps when checked. Category filters make it easy to browse, with individual app pages explaining slot requirements and providing useful info about each app.

  • Unmetered traffic is useful for ongoing seeding. Customers who only need qBittorrent and one lightweight companion app (FTP counts as an app!) may find the beginner package sufficient, but if your plans go further than that, start with NG-3500.

The restrictions that matter

  • Beginner plans exclude streaming apps, including Plex and Emby.
  • App slot math is important - some apps take more than 1 app slot. Make sure to plan ahead before purchasing.
  • SSH access is only available on much more expensive Dedicated offers.

What using Appbox is like

The app store’s installation dialog shows the slot cost and asks for an app address and password. qBittorrent took about a minute to install.

The dashboard acts as the management hub, while each app retains its own interface. Appbox also offers a resource boost feature that consumes spare slots but adds resources like RAM and CPUs to an existing app, so the nominal slot count may not always be the number of apps you will run depending on how demanding they are.

Our verdict

NG-3500 is the Appbox plan we would compare with Ultra or Whatbox for a media library. BG-2000 makes sense for a narrow torrenting setup, but its app restrictions are a substantial compromise.
